The Westerkwartier, which is famous for the beautiful green landscape and many historical elements, might seem to be unattractive for families and children at first sight. However, this is not true. Family park Nienoord and the large campsites, with activity programs for little children and teenagers, are well visited by families. But there is so much more. No, there aren’t any large theme parks, but there are many other opportunities to have fun. The Westerkwartier really is an empire for children to learn, experience and discover.
Next to walking, cycling, horseback riding, swimming or canoeing there are many different natural paths with for instance the Blote Voetenpad (bare feet path). On these paths are many things to do, smell, hear, see and feel in order to make the walking exciting.
Along the paths are all kinds of assignments and games to perform. In the Westerkwartier are many farms with for example: sheep, special cattle breeds or ostriches who open their doors for visitors.
By a lively manner, children can meet the places where their food comes from.
From the Westerkwartier different kinds of sights such as Speelstad Oranje, ZOO Emmen, Aqua ZOO Leeuwarden, the Seal sanctuary Pieterburen, Museum Kinderwereld(Children’s World) Roden, Prison Museum Veenhuizen, Comic Museum Groningen, and the lovely beaches of the Wadden are easy accessible. In the Westerkwartier and its surrounding area everything is available for families with children to have a fun and be active.
